The Five Requirements for Solar Installation in the Philippines
Most Filipino homeowners and business owners who inquire about solar already meet the majority of these requirements. Requirement 1: Roof Condition and Orientation
Four physical aspects of your roof determine whether solar installation is viable and what system size is achievable. Roof area and orientation directly affect solar panel system sizing in the Philippines — a south-facing roof with 32 square meters of clear space supports a 5 kWp system, while a north-facing roof of the same size may not justify any installation at all.

Structural Integrity
The roof must be structurally sound enough to support the additional weight of solar panels and mounting hardware. A standard solar panel weighs approximately 20 to 25 kilograms. Roof Orientation and Tilt
South-facing roofs produce the highest annual output in the Philippines. East and west-facing roofs produce approximately 15 to 20 percent less. North-facing roofs produce significantly less and may not justify the investment. A roof tilt of 10° to 20° is optimal for Philippine latitude. Flat roofs can use ballasted tilt-frame mounting systems to achieve the correct angle without roof penetrations.

Unshaded Area
The available roof area must be free from shading by trees, adjacent buildings, water tanks, or antennae during peak solar hours (9am to 3pm). Each kWp requires approximately 5.5 to 6.5 square meters of unshaded roof area. A 5 kWp system needs 28 to 32 sqm of clear, unshaded roof.

Roof Material Compatibility
Solar panels can be installed on concrete roof decks, corrugated metal roofing (G.I. sheets), clay and concrete tiles, and asphalt shingles. Each roof type uses a different mounting system. Requirement 2: Active Meralco Account in Good Standing
Your property must have an active Meralco electricity account to qualify for the ERC Net Metering Program. The account must be in your name or the name of the registered property owner. The following account conditions may delay or prevent net metering application.
Account Must Be Current
Outstanding Meralco arrears or a disconnected account must be resolved before a net metering application can be submitted. Meralco will not process a net metering application for a delinquent account.
Service Entrance Must Match System Requirements

Transformer Hosting Capacity
Meralco checks whether the local distribution transformer has available capacity to accept additional solar generation. Most residential areas have adequate hosting capacity. In areas with many existing solar installations, the transformer may be at capacity, limiting the installable system size.
Account Name and Property Title
The net metering application must be filed by the registered Meralco account holder. If the property has recently changed ownership, ensure the Meralco account has been transferred to the new owner before the application is filed.

Requirement 3: LGU Building and Electrical Permits

Certificate of Final Electrical Inspection (CFEI)
After installation, the LGU electrical inspector visits the property to inspect the completed solar system installation. The CFEI issued after a successful inspection is a required document for the Meralco net metering application. Requirement 4: Documents Required for Net Metering Application
